My suspicion is that the "sprinkle backstory into action" advice is trying to combat the plague of pages and pages of backstory with nothing actually moving the story forward, but I'm with you--it's clunky when it's not done well.

That said, I am probably not the best one to ask, since I'm definitely a backstory dripper, and my reader complaints usually tend toward wanting more information rather than less. One beta reader on a recent story continually commented with questions roughly a paragraph or two before the thing was explained; I got the feeling that a few paragraphs of immersion-breaking backstory might have satisfied her better. 🙃 All that to say, I'm already on your side in this (although I've only ever framed it as a character POV issue, not a reader immersion issue), so not the best one to give you the opposing perspective. 😜
